I’ll Be Happy When..

Should we postpone our happiness until we achieve the arbitrary goal we created for ourselves? Why do we put off doing things? Why do we put off living with joy, gratitude and happiness?

Stop Postponing Joy

I, too, am guilty of this. I grew up postponing my happiness.

I’ll be happy when...

  • I get a six-figure job

  • I lose x amount of pounds

  • I'm in love and married with my husband

We all do it to ourselves, even sometimes while being on autopilot. Why should we postpone our happiness? Who told us to do that?

What I’ve learned over time postponing my own happiness is that it makes us hate the journey more and enjoy life less. Having "I'll be happy when" syndrome, you start to complain about everything instead of celebrating the little wins, instead of giving yourself grace when hiccups in the journey happen. I stopped postponing happiness and started going on the joy ride. Why? Because I was tired of being miserable until I achieved a random goal. I fell in love with the process and learned to find joy and gratitude throughout the journey.

The older you grow the more you recognize how important the journey is as opposed to having all your expectations surround the destination.

I'll be happy when...

Only focusing on the end goal makes us try to constantly only focus on the highlight reels of our lives when life is mostly about the journey and not the destination. We are meant to live in the moment. Postponing your happiness does more damage than good. What if you die tomorrow and you choose to live waiting and waiting to achieve your goal to then be proud of yourself? Then what?

Instead of focusing all your energy on the goal, focus on the journey; you’ll learn much more on the journey than you will at the destination. Stop postponing your joy; indulge in today because tomorrow isn’t promised.

Live in joy where your feet are planted.
